Diagnosis in TCM Orthopaedics primarily relies on the “Four Examinations”:

  • Looking (Inspection) : refers to visual diagnosis. Observing the appearance of the affected area, noting swelling, deformities, skin color changes, posture, etc.
  • Listening (Auscultation) : refers to auditory diagnose. Listening to patient's description of their symptoms, understanding the nature of the pain and the cause of the injury.
  • Questioning (Inquiry) : refers to asking detailed questions about the cause of the injury, the circumstances, and the patient’s medical history.
  • Feeling / Examination (Palpation) : refers to touch and feel using manual techniques to assess the extent and location of damage to the bones and soft tissues.
